1. O LORD, why do you stand far off
and stay so far away?
And why do you conceal yourself
from us in troubled days?
The wicked in his arrogance
hunts down the weak and poor;
let him be caughtin snares that he
devised and held secure.

2. He speaks about the cravings of
his heart with boastful word;
he praises people filled with greed
while he reviles the LORD.
The wicked does not seek the LORD;
his heart is vain and proud.
With haughty face and pompous thoughts
he says, “There is no God.”

3. His ways will always prosper well,
he strikes a haughty pose.
He keeps his distance from your laws;
he sneers at all his foes.
He fortifies himself and says,
“No threat will bring me down.
I never will with trouble meet
or stand on shaky ground.”

4. The mouth of wicked man is full
of curses, threats, and lies;
both mischief and iniquity
his evil tongue devise.
Near villages he lies in wait,
his victims’ blood to spill;
he lurks in secret for his prey,
the innocent to kill.

5. Like lions crouching secretly
he waits for helpless prey.
He draws the poor into his net
and snatches them away.
His victims by his strength are crushed;
his prey collapse and fall.
He thinks, “God does not notice it;
he does not see at all.”

6. Arise, LORD God, lift up your hand;
do not forget the poor.
Why does the wicked say of God,
“My conduct he ignores”?
But you, O God, you see such wrong;
the wicked you repay.
The helpless puts his trust in you,
the orphan you sustain.

7. LORD, break the wicked person’s pow’r
and call him to account
for all the evil which he thought
would never be found out.
The LORD will ever reign as king;
his throne will always stand.
The heathen nations of the world
will perish from his land.

8. O LORD, the needy ones’ desire
you answer from on high;
you strengthen them within their hearts
and listen to their cry.
For you the orphan will defend,
and those who are oppressed,
so mortal man attacks no more;
the helpless may find rest.
