As Jesus faced the council, the accusations flew,
Till someone turned and said to him, ""Now tell us, who are you?
Are you the Christ, God's chosen one?"" He answered them: ""I am —
And soon the Son of Man will reign in power, at God's right hand.""
Nearby, out in the courtyard, next to the fire's warm glow,
The Rock named Peter sat, afraid, not sure where he should go.
He longed for news about the Lord, and so he stayed close by,
But when they asked him who he was, he chose to tell a lie.
A servant said, ""You're with him! I saw you two before.""
Yet once and twice and still again, the Rock denied his Lord.
He said, ""I do not understand!"" He firmly answered, ""No!""
He claimed, ""I do not know that man, "" and then the rooster crowed.
O Christ, we are like Peter, for we deny you, too.
Concerned for what the world might say, we do not live for you.
May we (like Peter later on) have courage to proclaim:
""We're bound to Christ. He is our Lord! We'll follow in his name!""
